Classic Spaghetti Recipe

Dive into the comforting flavors of a classic spaghetti dish with this old-school recipe.

  • 8 ounces (about 225g) spaghetti pasta
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 pound (450g) ground beef
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Grated Parmesan cheese, for serving
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

  1. Cook spaghetti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and chopped onion. Sauté until the onion is translucent and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add ground beef to the skillet. Cook, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 5-6 minutes.
  4. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, and red pepper flakes (if using). Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Simmer the sauce over low heat for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly and the flavors meld together.
  6. Add cooked spaghetti to the skillet with the sauce. Toss everything together until the spaghetti is well coated with the sauce.
  7. Serve hot, topped with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves if desired.
