  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 2 teaspoons dried Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and set aside.
  2. Cook the mostaccioli pasta according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the ground beef or Italian sausage to the skillet. Cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through.
  5. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, sugar, salt, and pepper. Simmer the sauce for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  6. In the prepared baking dish, layer half of the cooked mostaccioli pasta. Top with half of the sauce and half of the mozzarella cheese. Repeat with the remaining pasta, sauce, and mozzarella cheese.
  7. Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese evenly over the top.
  8. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  10. Let the baked mostaccioli cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired. Enjoy!
